I ran into a situation for someone where they weren't ready to upgrade the server/SharePoint yet and had to find a different way to correct this. Microsoft (kb article 934229) recommends upgrading to SP3 to correct this, as you already said, but I found a blog post that showed how to upgrade the ‘OK Button’ control on the ‘NewListing.aspx’ page to adapt around this.
