SharePoint Workflow: This workflow requires that the document is checked in. You must first check this document in and then start the workflow

Scenario:

We created two visual studio workflows, say, workflow A and workflow B. Workflow A starts when a document is added or changed and check out the document. We can’t start Workflow A manually. Workflow B can only be started manually. When we try to start workflow B on a document which is already checkout by the workflow A, following pop up appear:

This workflow requires that the document is checked in. You must first check this document in and then start the workflow

If we check in the document, workflow B works fine.

Resolution:

As per my understanding, the trick missing is that SharePoint workflow run with “System Account”. We have deployed two workflows. Workflow A and workflow B. First Workflow A run when document is uploaded or changed and check out the document. Document is checked out using current user token (user token of the user who has uploaded or changed the document). When we want to start Workflow B, it give us error that document needs to be check in as it was check out by another user and we can’t run workflow on it.

We changed the code of Workflow A and used system account to Check out the document. Now, when user try to run the workflow, it is already check out to “System Account” and have no issue in running.

Web Part Maintenance Page

It is sometimes difficult or rather impossible to delete or edit a web part. When clicked on “Modify Shared web part” link, error page appeared

“An unexpected error has occurred.

One way to delete the web part is to go to web part maintenance page and delete it. This can be done by adding “?contents=1” to default.aspx page.

An example can be http://portal/sitedirectory/abc/default.aspx?contents=1

STSADM: addcontentdb error

Scenario:

We created a web application and tried to replace the content database with another database. When run command:

stsadm –o addcontentdb –url http://abc –databasename WSS_ABC.

Following error displayed:

An update conflict has occurred, and you must re-try this action. The object SPWebApplication Name=SharePoint – 41272 Parent=SPWebService is being updated by domain\loging, in the OWSTIMER process, on machine ABC. View the tracing log for more information about the conflict.

Resolution:

The solution was to force cache refresh. This can be done as under:

1. On Central Administration machine, move from C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\SharePoint\Config\ GUID.

2. Copy cache.ini file to another location.

3. Open the file and replace the current integer with 1.

4. Restart “Windows SharePoint Services Timer” service.
5. Run the command again.

Hope this workJ.

MOSS 2007: Server error: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=96177

While trying to install WSS 3.0 SP1 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sharepointserver/bb735839.aspx) the installation get stuck at task 9 of 10 of SharePoint Products and Technology Configuration Wizard. When tried to access the server, encountered the following error:

Server error: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=96177

When look into the “Event Viewer”, found the following error description:

The schema version (3.0.149.0) of the database DATA
DATABASE_NAME on DATABA_SESERVER_NAME is not consistent with the expected database schema version (3.X.X.X) on DATABASE_NAME.  Connections to this database from this server have been blocked to avoid data loss.  Upgrade the web front end or the content database to ensure that these versions match.

Resolution:

The first thing we did was either remove content database from the web application which are having the error or Detach the database. This doesn’t seem to work. So we run the command

stsadm –o upgrade –inplace –url Central_Administration_URL –forceupgrade

and we were back in the business J.

Resolution:

After a lot of net search, the final solution was of installing Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 1 available at the URL (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sharepointserver/bb735839.aspx).

But for this solution work, you should have a server with version older than 12.0.0.6219.

You can check the version number by running SharePoint Central Administration and moving to Operation to “Servers in Farm”.

Hope that this solution works for you as well. J
